Chapter 28
Edward
Mary woke up from her nap to a banging on her door. It was Edward, both miffed that she hadn’t been home and anxious to see her. “I came by last night at your request, but you weren’t here. You did ask me over, didn’t you?” Once he saw her face, his frustration melted away. “What’s going on? I thought we had agreed to meet?”
“I’m sorry. My boss gave me something to work on at the last minute, I couldn’t leave,” she lied. “Please come in,” she said, peering down the hall.
“Look,” Edward softly scolded, once Mary locked the door, “Let’s set basic boundaries. If you’re not going to be here, don’t ask me over.”
“I know. I couldn’t get away . . . I wish I had a way of letting you know.”
“On top of that, when I came by your nosy neighbor caught me hanging out in front of your door. She started quizzing me – who was I, what I was doing, how did I know you.”
“Damn. That was probably Adrienne. What did you tell her?”
“I made up something about a work project that I needed to talk to you about, but I’m sure she didn’t believe me. I had to tell her my name and where we worked, or she would have gotten more suspicious. That woman is crazy.”
“Yeah, I’ve had run-ins with her, too. She’s not to be trusted.”
“Then this afternoon, this guy Peter I sometimes work with tells me that a manager came by his office along with a guard, asking questions about me.”
“They were asking questions about you? Why?”
“Got me. They wanted to know how often Peter and I work together, how I interact with others. The manager wanted to know if he thought I was I good at my job. Did he have any issues with me, was I a problem, stuff like that. Then he asked if he thought I was a loyal worker and loyal to the Program.”
“Loyal to the Program? Uh-oh, now that’s not good. Wonder why the inquisition?”
“It could have been a routine Program loyalty check, but it also could have been instigated by that damn neighbor of yours. Anyway, Peter is a good guy. He told them he only works with me sporadically, but when we have worked together things have gone smoothly. He said I was a very good worker and completely loyal to the Program. I couldn’t thank him enough.”
“That does make me wonder who else they might have talked to about you? Anyone else say anything? What about your boss?”
“No one other than Peter mentioned anything. Of course, that doesn’t mean no one else was interviewed. People get scared and go silent after they’re approached by the Program.”
“No doubt.”
“But I don’t think this was coincidence. I think that woman neighbor of yours snitched on me.”
“Maybe. We’ll never know. Come here. You’ve had a rough 24 hours. Let’s put it aside, OK?”
“Listen, Mary, all this sneaking around we’re doing is weirding me out. And, if I get paired, we certainly won’t be able to—”
Mary cut him off.
